In a world dominated by mass-produced blades, Roselli stands as a true testament to artisanal craftsmanship, where steel is not merely shaped but transformed with care and purpose. At the heart of Roselli’s legacy is our Ultra High Carbon (UHC) steel – a material renowned for its unparalleled hardness, resilience, and edge retention. Rooted in traditional metalworking and perfected through decades of innovation, UHC steel reflects the dedication and expertise passed down through generations. This steel is the product of decades of dedication, research, and skill passed down through generations, with roots firmly planted in traditional metalworking.
Roselli UHC steel: A legacy of craftsmanship and precision
The process: How we craft our UHC steel
Each Roselli knife is crafted through a meticulous, multi-step process to ensure maximum performance and durability:
1. Custom casting and rolling
We start with a brick of Finnish steel, specially cast to our exact specifications. The steel is then rolled multiple times, each under carefully managed temperatures to achieve the right characteristics for further processing.
2. Precision cutting and pre-grinding
After the rolling process, each blade is precisely laser-cut and flat ground to its precise thickness. This stage also includes pre-grinding, crucial for the blade before further refinement.
3. Hardening and stress-relieving
The blades are hardened and tempered under carefully controlled forms. This is a critical step in UHC steel production, ensuring the blade achieves the correct balance of hardness and flexibility. Afterward, each blade undergoes rigorous testing to meet our exacting standards.
4. Grinding and polishing
The blades are once again flat ground to remove any residue from the hardening process and to smooth the surface, perfecting the blade’s finish.
5. Surface treatment and etching
To protect against corrosion, the blade is etched in acid, creating a natural, durable layer that enhances the steel’s resistance to rust.
6. Assembly and finishing touches
The blade is paired with a handle made from waterproof curly birch, carefully hand-stained and oiled for long-lasting beauty and function. Finally, the knife is placed in a high-quality leather sheath.
